The term Marriage and its historic and universal nature of exclusiveness and uniqueness, marriage's particular benefit to society, and the age-old wisdom and understanding that heterosexual marriage is both foundational to society, and is the most healthy relationship within which to have a sexual relationship, is under attack! Some Canadian judges feel that denying homosexuals, and those with other unnatural and destructive sexual behaviours, is discriminatory to those other individuals. Public for Alternative Community Education (P.A.C.E.) has been working with the Hamilton Board of Education to develop a traditional Judeo-Christian values school program. Children would not be taught religion, but Ministry of Education curriculum would be delivered within a classroom environment where teachers would "help the children to connect the learning in the classroom to the child's life experiences and cultural and spiritual understanding."
Legal counsel for the Board of Education finds the proposal to be "consistent with the Education Act;" however, to prevent a possible legal challenge, it feels we need to have clear support within the Education Act or its Regulations.
What Is Needed? The Education Act states that all school boards have the "authority to establish (different) kinds of schools" (Reg.171.7). What we need is to have the Government of Ontario define the kinds of schools allowed. To address this need, Members of Provincial Parliament (MPP) have created a proposal that caucus will be examining in the fall. The proposal seeks to have the Government of Ontario define the kinds of schools that a public school board may establish.To be successful, these MPP's need other MPP's to hear from you.
