Gay Pride - Finding the Comfort Level

Letter to the Editor of the Hamilton Spectator
June 30, 2002

Once again Mayor Wade has led the way for Hamilton to usher in Gay Pride week. This time it was not enough to fly the flag over City Hall and host a parade. Mayor Wade went one step further and posed for a picture as he received a kiss from a drag queen. He says that city hall is working to strengthen its relationship with the gay community. The Spectator says the city is working to find its comfort level and talked of the struggle to achieve not only tolerance but also acceptance for gays. Clearly now tolerance and acceptance is not enough for the Hamilton Police Service who occupied a table at the festival where they were displaying their preference for gays by attempting to recruit them.

So it now seems that being gay (or claiming to be) has its benefits. Government agencies attend gay festivals offering employment to those who prefer to engage in high risk activity. Perhaps police should setup recruitment tables at raves in an attempt to recruit high-risk drug users. Certainly we wouldn't want to be accused of discriminating against that culture. After all, who wants to be called a drugophobe.

How slippery the politically correct\spiritually incorrect slope has now become in the past 20 or so years. Not so long ago sodomy was illegal and for good reason. Then a few in society decided this may be hurting the self esteem of those who participated and moved to "get government out of the bedroom." Then in their great wisdom a few social engineers backed by media set out to create an atmosphere of equality for those who choose to participate in sodomy . Enter the human special rights commission. Next came some public school boards, distributing pro-gay propaganda and inviting homosexual couples to broaden the minds of young children and have them consider what their sexual future might be. Now we set up recruiting tables at gay events hoping to attract people to the Police force who prefer gay sex. How does one exactly prove their gayness when applying?

Many would say that gay pride week and recruiting gays has nothing to do with the sexual behaviours of homosexuals but rather it is about supporting all people no matter whom they choose to love. If this is true, then perhaps someone could explain the table where they were giving away free Dick Tacks and Tit Tacks breath mints in the shape of genitals. Not about sex, who are we trying to kid?

Lyla Miklos, chair of Hamilton's pride committee complained, "We're not good enough to adopt kids or give blood." So we see the next slip down the slippery slope is that people who participate in homosexual acts must have the right to adopt children. Let's set the record straight on that one. Nobody has the right to adopt children, it is a privilege. This privilege is not based on the needs or wants of prospective parents, it is based solely on the needs and best interests of the child, It is very clear that children are best served by a stable, married, mom and dad (male and female) family. End of story.

Ms. Miklos doesn't stop with her selfish ambition to demand the right to adopt children but goes on to whine about her ambition for the gay community to have the right to donate blood. She is of course referring to Question 16 of the Canadian Blood Services Donor Questionnaire which reads "Male donors: Have you had sex with a man even once since 1977." If the male donor answers ‘yes', he does not get a parade or an offer of employment, rather he is rejected as a blood donor. Discriminatory? You bet. That is referred to as rational logic based on the well-being of the general public.

Presently, Canadian Blood Services is going to court in an effort to identify a person who sent anonymous e-mails claiming to have lied in his response to Question 16. It is disgraceful that the internet provider must go to such lengths to protect this person's identity. Such donors are barred for fear of passing on HIV and hepatitis. The fact is that homosexual males who participate in anal intercourse are 814 times more likely to contract HIV than males who do not. This explains why this 2% of the Canadian male population account for 87% of all HIV cases.

It is clear that homosexual behaviour is high risk and no amount of social engineering, parades or flags over the city will ever change that. Our health department and public school board agree. In a revision to page 8-45 of their Pilot Sex-ed Curriculum they wrote the following:

"11. Anal sex : Most people do not engage in this activity. However, this activity puts those involved at a very high risk of getting an STD, including HIV/AIDS."

This letter is not about hating people or not caring about the conditions under which they were influenced to become what they are today, it is the opposite. If you care for someone you do not encourage, congratulate or celebrate their choice to participate in high risk behaviour. You make every effort to offer assistance in helping deal with the issues that led them to their behaviour in hopes of finding healing which hopefully will lead them away from unhealthy behaviour. This type of intervention is considered ‘homophobic' by some, I call it love and doing the right thing. With that I find my comfort level.
