The concept of a Christian alternative program within the Public School System is still alive. Although the change in the provincial government has created a delay, early discussions with MPP's indicate an interest in the concept. Liberals indicate interest as it provides choice within public education.

To strengthen our position, we have joined forces with the Muslim and Jewish communities. The purpose of joining forces is not to create a common program, because all three groups have the same reasons for creating programs that deliver curriculum having respect for their own religious values. But the strategy is that if the school board were to establish three alternative programs - a Muslim, a Christian and a Jewish - then they could not be criticized nor taken to court for giving favour to any particular religious group.

The Muslim community is particularly interested. After 911, Muslim children within Hamilton public schools came under a great deal of persecution and the Muslim community quickly rallied and began their own private alternative school. The school population has maxed out. There are still more than 12,000 Muslim children within the Public school system and early indications are that a significant number of these families would be interested in a Muslim alternative program.

Next Step Representatives from the three faith communities will soon be visiting the local MPP's (Marie Bountrogianni and Jennifer Mossop). Please pray that the local MPP's and the Liberals see the need for such alternative programs and support the concept of a change to the Regulations of the Education Act to encourage Boards of Education.
