Letter to the Editor of the Ancaster News Response to `It's About Equality'The 'It's about equality' line has certainly been tossed about quite a bit lately. As a matter of fact, it may have surpassed the 'Thou shalt not judge' phrase for popularity. These lines are commonly used to defend high-risk behaviour under the guise of tolerance and diversity. Let us look at the 'Gays are 10% of the population no matter where you travel' myth. The 10% myth originated form the much quoted Alfred Kinsey, a zoologist who carried out a study on sexual behaviours of male prisoners amongst whom were a high population of sex offenders. It was from this population that he claimed 10% practiced homosexual behaviours. A more accurate perspective is evidenced in the 1988 Canada Youth and AIDS Study, Queen's University, the largest Canadian Study of its kind. Table 6.2 revealed that in fact, homosexuals represented 1% of the population and bi-sexuals 2%. At the recent 'Marriage and Same-Sex Unions' hearings held by the Federal Justice Committee in Toronto, I had the honor of defending the June 8,1999 Parliamentary definition of marriage as being the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. Opposing me was the Ontario Federation of Labour. The Federation took exception with the 2001 Census Canada data which revealed that in fact same-sex couple households were only 0.5% of all couple households in Canada. They argued that the population of a specific group should not determine the amount of rights they receive and that their rights should be equal. When asked if the federation supported polygamists (another sexual orientation) and their desire to marry multiple partners they replied, 'It depends, how many are there.' Further to that point, if this is about equality then how will Canada honor the rights of bi-sexuals? Surely we will not discriminate and restrict them to only one partner. Your foundation was equality. Prior to this latest court ruling, a heterosexual was permitted to marry one person of the opposite sex, so was the homosexual. They were in fact equal. This latest ruling has not in fact bestowed equal rights it has enforced special rights. If you were truly open-minded you would look at the facts regarding homosexual behaviour and realize that since homosexuality is not natural, homosexual acts are destructive to the human body. This is why the incidence rates of sexually transmitted diseases are much higher for homosexuals. The incidence of AIDS \HIV among male homosexuals and bisexuals is 814 times higher than it is for the male heterosexual population and gonorrhea of the throat is 3.7 times higher in homosexuals than in heterosexuals. (Canadian Medical Association Journal 144 (1995): 713-721) There are many other areas of inequality within the area of physical, emotional and spiritual wellness; however space will not permit further expansion at this time. In closing, ask yourself this question, "Why does the Canadian Blood Services questionnaire ask male donors if they have had sex with a man even once since 1977?" If the answer is 'yes', the potential donor is rejected without a parade or extension of any special right. Perhaps all relationships are not equal. Maybe embracing high-risk behaviour is not the loving thing to do. Perhaps my Creator was acting out of a heart of a loving father when He forbade me to enter into homosexual acts. Maybe He is not the cruel judge many make Him out to be. I request you to show your stand for equality and print this reply unedited. Although it varies from your view, I am sure you deem it in every way equal.
