Ontario School Board Proposes Thought Control in Chesley, OntarioLifeSite Daily News - November 26, 2002 - Reference to "the inherent normality and superiority of heterosexuality" to be prohibitedCHESLEY, ON - The Bluewater District School Board which takes in the Grey Bruce area of Ontario has released a new policy proposal which bans the belief that normal male-female sexual relations are superior to homosexuality. The Board, which oversees programs in 50 elementary schools and 11 secondary schools, took 18 months to draft the policy which bans heterosexism which is defined in the document as "the assumption that everyone is heterosexual and the belief in the inherent normality and superiority of heterosexuality." Some trustees were concerned that the 'heterosexism' definition was purposefully provoking but education director David Armstrong welcomed the controversy at the policy session. "Yes there will be concern and controversy and I say, bring it on. Let's get into it," he said. Mary Anne Alton, Bluewater's elementary superintendent and a task force member said the policy would forbid a school from insisting that prom dates are heterosexual, as an Ontario Catholic school attempted to do recently in the Marc Hall case. The Owen Sound Sun Times reports that the draft policy now goes to secondary and elementary principals and will be circulated in January and February to school parent councils for comment before final approval at the March policy committee meeting. |
