Don’t walk by. Dispel some of the myths that surround gays and lesbians. A lot of mainstream youth that I have met have been told to take their ancient religious texts literally, especially when it comes to gay difference. Point out to them that today we live under the rule of law and that, under those laws, all people have the same rights no matter what a particular religion may prescribe. Teachers, especially in a public education system, must not hesitate to challenge religious doctrines. We respect the Christian, Jewish and Muslim students who are in our classes, but religious language
cannot trump the laws of a democratic society. Public education is the basis of our society and must serve everyone. Ideas that contradict our values as members of Canadian society cannot have trajectory.
