Hamilton Police Service - 2003 Annual Hate/Bias Crime Statistical Report

Prepared by Detective Steven Hahn.

In 2003, the Hate Crime Unit received and categorized a total of 108 incidents. 45 of these incidents involved offences that were committed against a person or property and fell within the parameters of a 'hate crime' as defined and utilized by the Hamilton Police Service.

Patterns of Victim Groups - Group Victimization: Incidents involving Race represented 22 or 50% of the reported (45) hate/bias motivated incidents. In the category of Multi-Bias there were 8 incidents representing 18% of the total. In terms of the data arranged in descending order, there were a reported 10 incidents (22%) against a person's Religion.

In terms of breakdown representing the remaining victim groups, 2 incidents (4%) involved Sexual Orientation, 1 incident involved Ethnicity, 1 incident involved Nationality, and 1 incident involved Similar Factor (those occurrences where the victim(s) share some type of commonality i.e. persons that dress and identify themselves as Goths or abortion providing physicians. Age, Disability, Gender and Language were all Nil.

In the City of Hamilton, there is currently no evidence or information to suggest the presence of any organized hate based groups. There are however, individuals present in our community who share similar distorted ideologies and who praise the human pestilence of hatred that can sometimes be found woven through the social fabric of our country. We must be cognizant that this type of intolerance exists."
